If We Are Moving Too Fast it is Your Fault (ChurchCrunch)
If there’s one message I wish to shout from the rooftops, it’s essentially this. I know many smaller congregations that are trying to just survive, and they know that technology is a good part of how to reach out to the younger generations. And my mission is to help them in that endeavor. But I know, just as they do, that a technology strategy that leaves behind half the congregation is useless. The older members of many congregations KNOW they’re behind the times; sometimes they just don’t care, but often they just need the help to get a better grasp on what exactly they need to be doing.
These older members are the ones that carried most churches (and indeed, the whole Church) through some troubled times, and we owe our congregations to them. In some cases, they’re the ones STILL carrying the workload. They DESERVE to be brought in on this, and though it may slow us down to have to explain to them what Facebook is and how to strategize around it, they’re an asset, not a liability. They’ve got the experience that many of us DON’T have, and bring something to to the table, too.
So before you drive ahead with your next church technology project, make sure there’s someone there to be the voice of those who’ve been doing this church thing a heck of a lot longer than us.
